If we all worked “smarter, we won’t have to work longer,” he tweeted Wednesday. In an accompanying blog post, he argued that innovations like self-driving cars and drones will cause more jobs to be taken over by robots.
“Could people eventually take three and even four day weekends?” he wrote. “Certainly.”
Branson isn’t the only one who believes the future of work will be less demanding. Google co-founder Larry Page has also called for the end of the 40-hour work week.
“The idea that everyone needs to work frantically to meet people’s needs is not true,” Page told Vinod Khsola, a billionaire venture capitalist, as quoted by Computerworld in 2014.
All Work and No Play
Other big names take a darker tone about automation. Elon Musk has repeatedly warned of automation and the future of employment.
“A lot of people derive meaning from their employment. If you’re not needed, what is the meaning? Do you feel useless?” he told an audience at the World Government Summit in Dubai back in 2017. One option: universal basic income — the concept of distributing a basic income to every citizen of a nation. In fact, he argues, it would be a necessity.
But just because our billionaire overlords think it’s a great to axe hours and give us more holidays, it’s still pretty unlikely that will happen any time soon.
People have been saying this would be the "future" for DECADES. Every "What will the future be like?" thinkpiece from the 60s predicted the 3-day-work-week by the '90s.
It didn't happen, and it won't happen, because it's not a technological problem. It's a socioeconomic one: if you make people 5/3 more efficient, we won't reduce their work-week from 5 to 3 days; we'll just demand more work out of them in the name of "growth" (With most of the profit going to the CEOs, of course; what, you think we'd pay the workers more?)Or they'll fire 2/5 of the staff so the remaining employees have more to do. Greed expands to meet productivity.
And this isn't "Oh, humans have an innate need to work and won't be happy unless they're doing 40 hours a week"; a 7-day work-week was standard for most of humanity for most of history. We coped just fine when people started getting Sundays off, and we coped just fine when the weekend was invented, and when vacations for the working class were invented (Though there were absolutely a lot of angry thinkpieces in the newspapers of the day fretting about how those uncouth poors were going to turn to drinking, crime, and overthrowing the bourgeois if we didn't work them sunup-to-sundown 6 days a week). The nominal 40-hour-work-week exists because our culture has been taught to accept it as optimal, and we have to un-learn that before we can solve it.
People have been inventing myths about food for about as long as they've been preparing meals. Common culinary folklore can range from relatively sensible cautionary tales to far more inventive notions—and damn, can they be silly.
Recently, we asked Atlas Obscura readers to send us the most memorable food myths they'd ever heard, and we got hundreds of amazing responses. Did you know, for instance, that you aren't supposed to eat tuna and ice cream on the same day? Or that eating peanuts at a NASCAR race is bad luck? And don't even get us started on all the ways milk can supposedly be turned into deadly poison when combined with other foods.

I'd always been taught never to use butter to soothe a burn, but had never once heard anyone suggest why you might try it in the first place until at age 38, I heard my wife's grandmother suggest it.
Also, it was once apparently widely believed that Zachary Taylor died from eating too many cherries. (Modern science reckons he just had a bad stomach bug and his doctors basically treated him to death with bleedings and emetics and mildly-toxic-19th-century "cures")
Depending on who you ask, straws are either having the worst year ever, or a revolutionary one.
For whatever reason, be it Hashtag Activism, or their ticket just finally getting punched, in 2018, everyone’s starting to get hip, woke, whatever—they’re fully-realizing the danger of single-use plastics (like plastic straws).
And, bottom-lining it, whether you like it or not, the simple fact is this: On a long-enough timeline, there’s never a good argument in favor of plastic straws.
Which is why everyone, all the cool kids, are getting themselves their own reusable straws. And not just any straw—a good one. Maybe one that, say, is easy to clean. Or one that you don’t have to schlep around all inconvenient-like. One that comes in a few decent colors would be nice, too? Alas, enter FinalStraw: The collapsable, cleanable, folding straw-on-a-keychain that took Kickstarter by storm, to the tune of a $1.8 million-dollar crowdfunding campaign. Why all the fuss over a folding straw?

But if none of those selling points are enough, how about this one: You’ll be saving the world, one sip at a time. Also, it’s a brilliantly easy, cheap stocking stuffer for anyone you know. Especially anyone intent on ruining the world with their plastic trash, or trash habits. Or people who can’t drink out of the lid of a cup correctly. Or anyone who you just want to smash, with a present, into a moral equivalence quagmire, where they will be forced to reckon with their own innate selfishness and the fact that they do not, in fact, want a better world for those who come after them, and that they are—let’s be perfectly clear—destined to repeat the cycles of damage, not just to our Earth, but the people on it. Because they just need to drink out of a plastic straw. That, you will argue with this person, is the reason they want their children to have a dying world.

Described as "folding", but does that mean you can drink out of it while it's bent, like a bendy-straw? Most reusables and biodegradable straws don't work that way, which makes them useless for people who use plastic straws to accommodate a disability. Until we sort that bit out, these straw bans are going to do a lot of collateral damage to people who've already got it tough enough.
Fred Clark, the Slacktivist, has written a bunch of times before about the "Anti-Kitten-Burning Coalition". Long story short, probably no one is burning kittens or hunting shelter animals for sport; claiming such (and in many cases, convincing yourself you believe it too) is a way to make yourself feel like a hero for opposing something evil (Without having to do much work, since you can't actually go out there and fight the kitten-burners as said burners do not exist), and get other people to sign on to support your side because otherwise they're siding with the kitten-burners.
Halloween might be over, but it's never too late to celebrate an awesome costume, even if it's going on a paper turkey rather than a human. Forget tracing your hand and turning it into a turkey, that's so 20th century: kids these days (or their parents or teachers) have gotten more creative with their Thanksgiving crafting, and the hottest craft for these rainy November days is the turkey in disguise.
Starting the morning with eggs and coffee is a timeless approach to breakfast. But the ways in which these two ingredients successfully combine is far more variable than scrambled and black, inhabiting respective plate and cup. Egg coffee, for example, takes on multiple forms. While the Vietnamese rendition incorporates hot, sugary, frothed egg into a Robusta brew, Scandinavian egg coffee uses the egg as a clarifying agent to enhance a less-than-optimal cuppa joe.
Swedes and Norwegians invented this brewing method, which requires cracking a whole egg into coffee grounds with a bit of water, then mixing everything into a slimy mush. After bringing a pot of water to a rolling boil, drinkers then add the coffee mixture and let it steep. The result? Cup after cup of clean, sienna-tinted brew. The egg absorbs the tannins and impurities that typically impart bitterness and unpleasantry to low-quality cups of boiled java.
In the mid-1800s, Scandinavian immigrants brought the method to the United States' Midwest, which improved upon the suboptimal coffee available. The brew earned the nickname "church basement coffee" because it was ideal for boiling massive quantities of joe. It became a staple of social gatherings, and even now, many recipes for egg coffee make at least 10 cups. Eventually, the drip coffeemaker took over, but not even the most efficient machines can compete with the sheer volume afforded by the egg-reliant stovetop technique.
My dad used to sometimes make coffee in a pot on the stovetop. He'd drop an egg in near the end of brewing on the principle that the poaching egg would solidify around the grounds to filter them out. Possibly a simplification/corruption of the Scandinavian method?
